Surgeon general’s report: One in seven Americans face substance addiction

are some of the grim statistics provided in a new report
released Thursday by the US surgeon general and the
Department of Health and Human Services.
misuse disorders cost “more than $400
billion annually in crime, health and lost
productivity.” The human costs are
from motor vehicle crashes, intimate partner
and sexual violence, suicide attempts and
fatalities, overdoses, and numerous health
opioid overdose in 2014, and an estimated 20,000 died as a
result of an unintentional overdose of alcohol, cocaine, or
non-opioid prescription drugs.

most actionable at the local level.”
